| POND CARE PHOS-OUT The Phosphate Problem:
Phosphorous is an essential nutritional ingredient in fish food. Fish must have phosphorus for survival and growth. Phosphorus is used in bone and cartilage formation, and collagen production. Fish release excess phosphorus via waste products. The phosphorous that is "locked up" in the waste is sometimes called organic phosphate. As the fish waste and uneaten food decompose, phosphate is released as inorganic or reative phosphate into the water. Reactive phosphate is used by algae as a nutrient. Phosphate test kits measure inorganic reactive phosphate. In ponds, a build-up of inorganic phosphate may cause excessive algae growth.
Phosphate can also enter ponds through tap water. Some tap water sources contain phosphate naturally. Some water treatment companies add phosphate-based corrosion inhibitors to protect pipes. These chemicals, called polyphosphates, will break down into inorganic phosphate and measurably increase the phosphate level in ponds.
Is Phosphate a problem in every pond?
No. A well planted water garden may not have any detectable phosphate because the plants are removing it from the water. If the pond contains a lot of fish or is being over-fed, there may be a build-up of phosphate. In ponds with a large fish load and heavy feeding there can be a build-up of phosphate.
Does a high phosphate level always result in an algae bloom?
No. Algae, like all plants, require a variety of nutrients to grow. There may be more than enough phosphate but too little iron to support algae growth. Testing may show very high phosphate levels yet the water is crystal clear. If, however, the "missing nutrient" becomes available, an algae bloom is sure to occur.
How does PHOS-OUT work?
PHOS-OUT binds with inorganic phosphate, making the phosphate unavailable as a nutrient. This reaction can sometimes be seen as a temporary haze in the water. The phosphate haze will be removed by the pond filter. One treatment will remove 1.5 ppm phosphate.
How often can PHOS-OUT be used?
PHOS-OUT can be used once a week or when testing indicates a phosphate problem.
Can pets and wildlife enter the pond once PHOS-OUT has been added?
Yes. PHOS-OUT can be used in ponds visited by pets, birds, and other wildlife.
Instructions for using PHOS-OUT
Add 25 ml of PHOS-OUT for each 100 gallons of pond water. Pour into water flow for even distribution in the pond. A slight temporary haze may form as phosphate is removed. The haze will disappear in a few hours. Repeat treatment once a week or when testing indicates an increase in phosphate levels. One dose will remove 1.5 ppm phosphate.
16oz treats 1892 gallons.
